About Us

In the same way ultrasound technology changed diagnostic medicine, Blacktoe Medical is revolutionizing ultrasound usability through a new, finger-mounted imaging capture system bringing this safe technology to more applications and offering operators more freedom to do more than ever before.

As a physician-founded company, Blacktoe Medical focuses on solving everyday clinical problems through better designed, easier to use tools.

Headquartered in Portland, Oregon, the company was founded in 2001 by
Ronald W. Schutz, MD, a well-known cardiologist and inventor, who has a unique ability to see medical challenges and the solutions that improve care.

Blacktoe Medical is a seed-funded medical technology company. The team has received financial support from the U.S. Military's Telemedicine and Advanced Technology Research Center (TATRC), local physicians, and other investors.

Management Team

Ronald W. Schutz MD, FACC, Founder/Chairman
Dr. Schutz is a board certified cardiologist and Fellow of the American College of Cardiology with nearly 30 years experience in cardiac ultrasound. In 1982 he founded Heart Sounds, Inc., a leading echocardiography service provider to hospitals and clinics and remains its President. He has developed other medical devices that resulted in successful start-up ventures. B.S., Phi Beta Kappa, and MD, University of Illinois. Cardiology Fellowship, former Assistant Professor of Medicine and Director of the Adult Echocardiography Laboratory, Oregon Health Sciences University.

David Starr, Chief Executive Officer
Mr. Starr has over 25 years of marketing and operations experience with medical and consumer devices. He has held senior management positions at Inovise Medical and Hewlett-Packard (both medical and printers). BA, Cum Laude, Pomona College. MBA, University of Chicago.

Scott Corbett, Chief Technology Officer
Scott Corbett has over 25 years experience as a biomedical engineer/executive in the medical device industry and co-founded two Seattle-based biomedical companies, MicroConnex and Advanced Cochlear Systems. He has held senior engineering/management positions at Precision Interconnect (now Tyco Healthcare), and GE Medical Ultrasound Division. B.S. Physics, Occidental College, M.S. Acoustics, Pennsylvania State University.

Alan Andresen, Vice President Engineering
Mr. Andresen has over 25 years of engineering and management experience within the medical device industry. He was a co-founder of Inovise Medical Inc. where he worked as a member of the management team. He also held engineering positions at Hewlett-Packard consumer and medical products divisions. B.S. CprE Iowa State University.

Elizabeth Ettling, Chief Financial Officer
Ms. Ettling has served on the management teams for three rapidly growing start up enterprises in the Portland area. Her experience includes building corporate infrastructure, human resource management, corporate governance, finance, tax and operations. She has assisted in raising venture capital and was also integrally involved with two initial public offerings. BS, California State University Los Angeles, Business Administration.
